If you grew up with Argentinian parents, it is likely that as a child the 29th of each month you had gnocchi, or as they spell it in latin countries ñoquis. Last weekend I was reminded of this quirky tradition while searching for some italian spots in the city. A little blast of the past presented by an Argentinian pizza and pasta spot in Toronto. The 29th of each month, as proper Italo-Argentinians, they celebrate Gnocchi day, and have an all you can eat gnocchi night! Stoked by the idea of such a fun night, I tried to make a reservation, but failed massively… so I guess we know what I’ll be cooking tonight! Option B would be going to a regular italian spot and ordering gnocchi to celebrate this day that as kids we looked forward to with so much enthusiasm.
Gnocchi Day emerged in Argentina as a result of traditions brought over by the thousands of Italian immigrants who settled in this South American country during the twentieth century. Not only did we inherit from them mannerisms, fun slang, gestures, and a fantastic culinary repertoire but also this spectacular tradition which initially developed more as a circumstance of necessity than a "celebration". When you think about it, the 29 is the end of the month, money is running out (not everyone gets paid bi-weekly, as up in the north, especially back then) and by end of the month there is not much left in the kitchen pantry. The only ingredients left on hand tend to be the cheap and non-perishable such as flour, potatoes, and with some luck an egg or two. And what do all these things plus water make? Gnocchi! And so thats how the day came to be, italian immigrants, trying to make ends meet at the end of the month, started a tradition that many Argentinians still carry on today. How is it celebrated? The tradition is to put money under the plate during dinner to ensure good luck and prosperity over the next month.
Truth be told, it’s been awhile since I’ve celebrated this day consistently, but I’ve got great memories of it growing up and it holds a special spot in my heart. As I went about my day today, looking forward to my gnocchi dinner, I’m thinking.. Now that I get to start my own family and traditions, I think this is one that I will be implementing! Because even though I don’t think I need a special reason to eat this delicious italian meal, I like the idea of ??celebrating the end of the month and beginning the next one with a good plate of gnocchi. Besides, who would ever oppose to having gnocchi at least once a month?
